Preconception Care

Did you know that preconception care should ideally start at least 6 months prior to conception (if possible)?

The research suggests that the diet and lifestyle of the mother and father 6 months before conception can impact the child’s lifelong health.

Where possible, it is important to optimise maternal nutritional status prior to conception through diet modifications and nutritional medicine (if required). Post conception is just as (if not more) important, so if you missed the preconception stage, then you can start during post conception (if needed).

For some, this just means tweaking your diet to ensure you’re reaching your calorie, macro and micronutrient targets. And for others, it might mean taking a prenatal multivitamin and other essential nutrients such as iron, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin d, magnesium, calcium, folate, vitamin b12, choline, or zinc, depending on pathology results and presenting symptoms.

Preconception care is very individualised and everyone is different, so before you start taking random supplements off the shelf, book into your GP for a blood test and chat to a registered Naturopath or Nutritionist for specific tailored advice. Book in with Caitlin Jane Naturopath in Yeppoon or online for individualised advice.
